Moment in time

Moment in time
As Dancer and Prancer were roughly rummaging through the bright soft snow as white as a swans feathers, they were going to be late for Santa's Christmas take off. If the stressed reindeers didn't get to Santa in time, they would get the blame for any children that missed out on some cool presents this year. Oh no! Dancer and I will disappoint the one and only Santa Claws.

Cultural Festival

On Saturday 25th November, the day of the cultural groups, I went to the Owairaka tent to find my outfit for my first performance. My opening performance was kapa-haka. Just before we went on the stage my Kapa Haka teacher told us the Jacinda Ardern, the prime minister of New Zealand was opening the festival while we were on the stage. I was so excited to see the nz prime minister.
We performed lots of cool waiata.
I got a little scared because the crowed was so big and loud. But I new they were so happy and excited to see our performance.

My second performance was the Mexican cultural group. We did a unique version of the Mexican hat dance!
We were dressed in some sparkly red tutu’s and green bobble necklaces. There wernt as many people but there was still a big crowd.
After my performance everybody was clapping, I could see their bright smiles. I has an amazing day and I wish I could do it all over again.

Similes

We wrote our one similes because we read a book called ‘Jason’s extraordinary hair’ which has lots of similes in it.  A simile is something you compare with something else and they have in common.
Can you write a cool simile? Share it with me is a comment.
  • Her eyes glow like the midnight moon.
  • Her hair curled like a American Bashkir Curlies chestnut mane.
  • She sang like a nightingale singing her favorite song
  • My brother is as demanding as a hangry* queen
  • My sister is as annoying as a Kia

Diwali

On Tuesday the 17th of October some Hindu Indian dancers and musicians came to my school and performed a 400 year old dance, each move meant something different interesting . They also told us some very interesting facts about Diwali.

Here are 5 cool facts about Diwali:
  • The weight of the bells on the dancers feet are 7 kg each.
  •  It is an official holiday in 12 countries.
  • For two weeks students and workers get a holiday to celebrate Diwali with friends and family
  • Diwali is a five day celebration also known as "the festival of lights".
  • Diwali takes place on the 15th day of the Hindu month of Kartika.
I think the dancers and musicians were amazing because of all the talent in the performance. My favourite part of the dance was the the teachers getting up on the stage and gave it a go. Some teachers looked really funny compared to the professional dancers.

If I was Prime Minister

If I was Prime Minister…

  • Make tax higher for the rich and decrease the tax pay for the poor because the poor should be able to sustain themselves and their family.
  • Make homes for the homeless so they don’t have to live on the streets.
  • Making less junk and packeted food. 1. For the health of our sea. 2. The health of our fellow humans.
  • Get rid of Diesel vehicles because ¼ of the pollution is from diesel vehic
  • I NEVER WANT TO SEE A PLASTIC BAG AS LONG AS I LIVE!

Science Extravaganza

In the beginning of the term we went to each senior class and did science experiments. Here is what we found.

My learning Journal Term 3

This My learning Journal term 3.

My 2017 Speech. We should have horse riding at Owairaka School.

My 2017 Speech about Horse's. We should have horse riding at Owairaka School.

Who loves movie stars?
I mean, who doesn't?
Do you ever wonder if movie stars get any practice when they heroically jump onto their horses and gallop into the sunset?  Well, if I did that without any practice, I would topple over onto the ground and look like a total idiot.

Hi -  my name is Olivia and I love horses. I think that horse riding should be part of what we do at Owairaka school and in some ways it is just as important as Garden to Table or learning to swim.
So if we can have bees, surely we can have horses?

Firstly. horse riding can benefit anyone who does it in many, many ways.
Benefits include building confidence, balance and coordination by being on something a little less stable than the ground. If you are shy and nervous horses can help fix that because you need to be assertive by pulling the reins and controlling them.

Also, once you get hold of the horse you can feel so relaxed and it helps relieve lots of stress (LIKE FROM WRITING THIS SPEECH!) Ahh I need a horse.
Horse riding improves fitness. Our muscles in our legs and tummies get stronger by riding and caring for horses. Even mucking out the stables brings fitness too.

So,how would it look for our school
If there isn’t enough room for the horses and they can’t stay permanently at our school, we could find a place for them to live nearby. Each riding day they could be transported in horse floats over to our school.

Classes could have separate times to ride. The class would be split into a few groups. Considering the size of our field, riding would be on about six horses.
The first small group would be doing the horse riding. The second group would be learning how to take care of the horses from the instructor or horse teacher.

I Know you are wondering how we would pay for this all. Well I have a solution for that too. The government can pay! Im sure the government will  see that it is ideal to have horse riding lessons at Owairaka. They will see that horse riding in schools is unique and will help pay for the horses and horse riding instructors and hopefully find a place for the horses to stay overnight as well. Our school would be really popular for students and parents. Also if we need to fundraise more money, over the weekend we could let the public ride the horses for a fee. That way the horses can become part of our community.

Have you ever heard of an awesome program called “Riding for the disabled”?
Riding for the disabled is an organisation of volunteers who help disabled students by regularly taking them to riding stables where they ride, groom and handle the horses. On the riding for the disabled website, I have read about a girl called Liv - she has cerebral palsy. She lives in Gisborne and does riding for the disabled.

When she gets off the horse she is much more able to walk, and she is becoming a lot stronger. Cerebral palsy causes Liv’s muscles to tighten, but the Horse riding helps to relax them and as a bonus, she has also improved her confidence. Anyway, horse riding helps anyone that does it, disabled or not.

So with all these points I have talked to you about that’s why I think that Owairaka should be a unique school with horses, The benefits are amazing for students and teachers. I promise you, if you agree with me you might be seeing an Owairaka student jump on a horse and heroically gallop into the sunset as a expert.
Join me and see what we can accomplish.

Thank you.

MINDCRAFT THE MUSICAL!

On Thursday the 21th of september the day of the production the senior school had been rehearsing for, for the past 8 weeks had finally come. Mindcraft The Musical is an awesome 5-16 year old play. The play was written by Rachel Sutherland. In association with Take a Bow Productions.

It was based on a family of six including a dog. The two main characters were two kids ‘Joe and Alex’ they are device addicted.
Alex loved snapchat and social media. She was also a cyber bully without even knowing it. As for the boy Joe, he was addicted to Minecraft and his ‘amazing’ ‘DJ Dragon’. DJ Dragon was really an  evil dragon that mind controls unsuspecting victims.

On their dangerous trip through Minecraft they snached by the dragon wanting to turn all children into Minecraft zombie slaves. The dragon wants to take over the Internet and mind control everyone. Will the family be able to stop the evil dragon with their courage and knowledge. Mum, Dad, Grandma, Scratch and Alex bumped into friendly creatures and unfriendly creatures. On their way they meet Notch the Minecraft creator and glitch in the game. Notch had a cousin called Herobrine. He is a spy for the dragon but will Herobrine come to his senses will Notch needs him the most.

In Mindcraft the Musical I play as Notch. He is the creator of Minecraft and knows everything about it. I get stage fright, so before I went on stage I was really nervous. I loved doing Mindcraft the musical because when I was up there I saw smiles on everyone's faces. It is so much fun on stage with all my friends.

Science in a van visit

Date: 2/5/17
Today we had a visit from the awesome people from ‘Science in a Van’, ’Allan and Emma’. The morning started with some fun science tricks where Emma pulled a tablecloth from underneath a jug of water and 2 empty cups. She asked a teacher aid to come up and do the tablecloth trick. Emma told us that there can’t be friction because then the cups would fall off. But she was using the pulling and pushing forces. Next Allan went on stage and got a board hanging by 4 strings in a pyramid shape.
A while later the people who Payed $3 got to see more tricks. Allan got 5 volunteers to use the 5 senses. He put blindfolds on of four of us and we had to figure out (by using our senses) what we were seeing, feeling, tasting, smelling and hearing. We were also used to work out what things are e.g. the difference between wood and ice cream.

Next we found out that cans with hot water, gas and aluminium can implode when dunked into cold water. It only had bit of water and gas it though (CO2).

After that Alan made dry ice explode in some containers. He put the dry ice in the sealed container and Within a few seconds then it would pop up and the bottle and fill it would  first up to the roof and fall back down again.

He also put dry ice into a water bottle and it made a cloud. This cloud burst out of the water bottle lid and it kept going for about 5 minutes then died down. It was a Cloud of CO2, Straight from solid to gas. We found out CO2 doesn’t like liquid.

Soon he  called out one of our teachers and got her to sit down the chair. He put some water in a cup then into the next then into the next. The water was in the third Cup. He shuffles the cups around but only the cups without the water in. Then we had to pick which cup to tip on her head which was the third Cup. That one was the cup with the water inside, except when we turned it upside down nothing came out. we looked inside and found the water was stuck in the cup. He told us that he used a powder called sodium polyacrylate, It soaks up the same amount of liquid as me drinking 25,000 litres of water in one second.

I learnt that there are 3 states of matter
  1. Solid
  2. Liquid
  3. Gas

I also learned that Hot aluminium dunked into cold water makes the can implode. There was a bit of water and gas in the the can as well.

Another cool thing I learnt was when we mix dried ice and water it makes clouds that burst out of the bottle. It looked really cool.

Also I found out Dried ice that is put in a sealed container = explosion. The container will fly up to the roof very fast.

I had a really great time watching ‘Science in a Van’. I learnt lots of new, interesting, information about states of matter and I would highly recommend it to anyone else who had the opportunity to watch it. Here is a link to Science in a van.

My Timeline

This is my Timeline. It has the important moments of my life.  From the moment I was born to right now.
It was easy to make and lots of fun. It didn't take long to make. I realise that I am a very lucky girl except for when I snapped my arm backwards. I hope you like it.  Please comment on how I could improve in my work.

I made this poster with one of my best friends Christine. We put a lot of hard work in to it. Our slogan is "Earth care is everywhere". We hope you like it and please comment so that we can improve our work.
Here are some of the earth jokes from the poster.
1. How can you tell the ocean is friendly?
2. How do you organise a space party?
If you think you know the answers please comment.

This is me

These are my posters about me. I put a lot of work into them. I hope you like them. One of my hobby's is hula hooping, I have been doing it for 7 years. I am currently practising for my school talent show.

Christmas Morning

Here is A piece of writing of what I did in my Christmas Holiday. I was with my mums side of the Family.

“Yay!” Its finally here. “Christmas day is here.” Everyone gathered round and discuss who should be Santa and give out all of the presents. My cousin Hannah stood up and said “Maybe the youngest should be Santa”. Everyone Look around and stopped at me. Heather was holding the hat, she crowned it on me like I was the real Mrs Claus. I picked up my first present, it felt so soft, like a jumper of some sort. Everyone was waiting eagerly to hear the name. “To Tom. Merry Christmas.” There were hundreds of presents to give out and by the time I was done I was going to burst with excitement. everyone had opened their presents and delighted with what they got. Now it was time to open my presents. I picked up the first present. It was a small pink box with a ribbon. Each of the girl got one. In the the box were small unique earrings. I loved them. They were circle and on the outside it was silver and in the middle, it was sparkly pink. There were a few more presents to go.
After I opened them my cousin’s and I walked down the vineyard and the adults prepared lunch.
